Directional Boring

Westwind is expert at directional boring, also commonly called horizontal directional drilling or HDD. Directional Boring is a method of installing underground pipes and conduits along a prescribed bore path from the surface with minimal impact to the surrounding area, Westwind has completed installation lengths up to 6500' and diameters up to 48" have been installed in shorter runs.

The process is used for installing telecommunications & power cable conduits, water lines, sewer lines, gas lines, oil lines, product pipelines and environmental remediation casings. It is used for crossing waterways, roadways, shore approaches, congested areas, environmentally sensitive areas and many other areas where other methods are more complex or expensive to use.

Directional boring is used in place of other techniques because:

  • It causes less traffic disruption
  • Costs less
  • Allows for deeper installation
  • Allows for longer installation
  • Does not require an access pit
  • Can be completed in less time
  • Has more directional capabilities
  • Is safer for the environment

Westwind owns and operates two directional boring machines, a vacuum truck and a vacuum trailer. These machines enable us to offer this service and provide options to our clients so that you may avoid delays and cost overruns often encountered when using subcontractors.

Westwind has completed many Directional Boring projects. For photos from past Westwind Directional Boring projects, click here.
